How to spot meter rollback — and how to read an inspection report.

Meter (odometer) rollback is one of the most common worries for used-car buyers in Pakistan. This guide explains the practical signs, in English and Roman Urdu, and how to make sense of an inspection report.

Five signs worth checking

01

Wear that doesn't match the reading

Pedals, steering wheel, gear knob and driver's seat tell their own story. Heavy wear on a car showing very low kilometres deserves a question, not a benefit of the doubt.

02

Service stickers and records

Oil-change stickers, service book entries and workshop invoices often carry dated odometer readings. If an older record shows more kilometres than the meter shows today, something is wrong.

03

Inconsistent inspection history

If the car was inspected or listed before, compare the readings over time. Mileage should only move in one direction.

04

Diagnostic records

Many modern vehicles store mileage in more than one control unit. A diagnostic scan can sometimes reveal a reading that disagrees with the dashboard.

05

Auction sheets for imported cars

For Japanese imports, the auction sheet carries an independent mileage record from before the car entered Pakistan. Ask for it and verify it.

Remember

No single sign is proof

Each sign is a reason to ask more questions, not a verdict. The strongest picture comes from combining records, inspection observations and documents — and from being honest about what remains unknown.

Paanch ahem nishaniyan (Roman Urdu)

01

Meter se zyada istemal ki nishaniyan

Pedal, steering, gear knob aur driver seat ka istemal dekhain. Agar meter bohat kam kilometre dikhata hai lekin gaari ka istemal zyada lagta hai, to sawal zaroor poochein.

02

Service sticker aur record

Oil change sticker, service book aur workshop ki rasidon par tareekh ke saath meter reading likhi hoti hai. Agar purane record mein kilometre aaj ke meter se zyada hain, to koi masla hai.

03

Purani inspection ya listing se muqabla

Agar gaari pehle inspect ya list ho chuki hai, to purani readings se muqabla karein. Mileage hamesha aage hi barhti hai, peechay nahi.

04

Diagnostic scan

Nai gaariyon mein mileage aksar ek se zyada control unit mein mehfooz hoti hai. Diagnostic scan kabhi kabhi dashboard se mukhtalif reading dikha deta hai.

05

Imported gaariyon ka auction sheet

Japanese import gaariyon ke liye auction sheet par Pakistan aane se pehle ki mileage darj hoti hai. Isay zaroor mangein aur verify karein.

Yaad rakhein

Koi ek nishani saboot nahi

Har nishani sirf mazeed sawal poochne ki wajah hai, final faisla nahi. Behtareen tasweer records, inspection aur documents ko mila kar banti hai — aur jo maloom nahi, usay imaandari se manna bhi zaroori hai.

How to read an inspection report

Inspection reports can feel overwhelming — pages of checkpoints with little guidance on what actually matters. A few habits make them far more useful:

  • Start with the source of each fact. A reading verified against a document means something different from an observation, an owner's statement, or an automated suggestion. A good report labels the difference.
  • Separate structure from cosmetics. Repainted panels are common and often minor. Signs of structural repair, flood exposure or airbag deployment matter far more.
  • Look for what is not said. "Not inspected" or "information unavailable" is not the same as "all clear". Unknowns should stay visible, not disappear.
  • Ask for the evidence. Photographs, documents and readings behind each finding should be available to you, not just a summary score.

This is exactly the philosophy behind the Dansk Motors Vehicle Passport: every data point carries a source label — Verified Document, Owner Provided, Inspection Observed, Unverified, or Information Unavailable — so you can judge each fact on its own merit.
